The U.S. electric grid is a complex network of independently owned and operated power plants and transmission lines. This NPR series talks about it’s future.
WRAL provides an extensive guide to green related topics at their Green Guide website.
Count Down to Earth Day 2010
Most of us can probably remember when green was just a color, not a way of life being promoted by the media and political candidates. Many of us find ourselves overwhelmed or confused by the information that flashes around our television sets. Though most of us realize that green technology will help our environment and our planet, we are still uncertain about what it is and, more importantly, what our part is in all of it.
To better understand green technology, we must first understand what it is and why it is so important to us. Green technology is typically divided into two categories: Energy Green and Environmental Green. Energy Green includes alternative energy sources, like solar, wind and hydroelectric energies as well as biofuels. The smart grid, which would replace our old electric grid, is also classified as a kind of green energy. Conversely, Environmental Green includes topics, such as sustainability, conservation, and recycling. Though the topics contained in each category may seem vastly different from each other, it is important to realize that they are not exclusive from one another, and it will take a healthy marriage between them to address our present global challenges. Currently, global demand for fossil fuels is growing; however, the resources themselves are finite, diminishing rapidly and becoming more costly.
While the energy problems facing our world are significant, there is good news. To meet future global energy demand new sectors in the economy will have to be created. The largest sectors in energy alternatives and sustainable activities will reduce dependence on foreign oil reserves and substantially decrease dangerous carbon emissions. Instead of sending billions of dollars overseas for energy it will be invested in creating jobs and infrastructure in communities across our country. These sectors now called green will produce long-term, highly technical jobs. Additionally, these jobs will help to produce more efficient manufacturing processes, buildings, appliances, automobiles, and homes.
James Sprunt Community College understands the current challenges and will be monitoring closely developing trends in Green Technology.
